Shakira Finally Speaks on Her Tax Issues with Elle Magazine

Shakira hit headlines in July for possibly facing 8 years in jail for owing back taxes from 2012-2014 to the Spanish Government in the amount of 14.5 million Euros ($16.3 million).


The Details: The "Hip's Don't Lie" artist opted for trial claiming that the accusations of the Spanish Government are false! The Spanish Government is claiming that Shakira spent 183 days in Spain each year which qualified her to be a tax paying resident. Shakira who was formerly a resident of the Bahamas, changed her permanent residence to Barcelona to be with her then Soccer Star boyfriend Gerard Pique (after being together for a decade, they broke up earlier this year).


During an interview with Elle Magazine, Shakira claims that she was on tour during the alleged years and spent more than 240 days touring and feels as if she targeted by the Spanish Tax Authorities “While Gerard and I were dating, I was on a world tour,” she told Elle. “I spent more than 240 days outside of Spain, so there was no way I qualified as a resident. The Spanish tax authorities saw that I was dating a Spanish citizen and started to salivate.” Barcelona obviously doesn't agree with Shakira and will continue to pursue their charges. Shakira has opted for trial. "Because I have to fight for what I believe; because these are false accusations." "I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them. And finally, I was advised by one of the four biggest tax specialist firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was confident that I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one." A trial has not been set yet.
